Community Promotion and Education on Hand Washing

The Importance of Hygiene

In many communities, simple actions can have life-saving consequences. In The Gambia, diarrhea-related diseases remain a significant health challenge for children under the age of five. By prioritizing proper hand washing with soap and running water, communities can drastically reduce the spread of illness and promote better personal hygiene.

Critical Moments for Hand Washing

To ensure maximum health protection, it is vital to practice thorough hand washing during four key moments throughout the day:

  • Before preparing food
  • Before eating
  • Before feeding a child
  • After visiting the toilet

Community-Led Solutions

Schools play a central role in educating the next generation about these practices. At Sang Lowa Basic School, students and staff are actively involved in the Climate Smart Rural Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Development Project. This initiative, supported by the African Development Bank, is helping to reach thousands of rural and peri-urban Gambians.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this project is the focus on improvisation. When formal infrastructure is limited, the school demonstrates that resources can be created from simple materials—such as using repurposed water gallons and nails to create makeshift taps. This ingenuity ensures that students always have access to clean, running water before entering their classrooms.

A Commitment to Decency

Guided by the motto “Decency is no disgrace,” the school fosters a culture of cleanliness that extends beyond the classroom and into the homes of the students. By integrating water and sanitation education into daily routines, the project is taking a crucial step toward improving the overall health and well-being of the community.
